Medal of Honor: Warfighter unseats FIFA on UK charts

Shock and awe, Medal of Honor: Warfighter, which is receiving some of the worst reviews of the season so far, took first place in the UK last week. This is either a sign of the media's impotence or a hat tip to the brilliance of publisher EA that it withheld review copies until launch. A similar situation occurred with Resident Evil 6 a weeks ago, a game which still sits pretty at tenth place on this week's chart.

Other new releases last week included portable games Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask and Moshi Monsters: Moshlings Theme Park, which debuted at eighth and ninth place, respectively.

If you're wond ering about Just Dance 4 ('cause how can you not on the UK charts?), it may have slipped two spots from fourth to sixth, but sales were actually up one percent. Dance Central 3 debuted in 39th place. Shimmy on past the break for the UK top ten.

Stiq Figures, October 15 - 21: Immortality edition

Welcome to Stiq Figures, where the sales data is after the break and the posts don't matter. Every week, we take a look at, uh, something â€" meanwhile, the previous week's Japanese hardware sales figures are posted after the jump, and a discussion of said figures takes place in our comments. It may not be conventional, but it's a time-honored Joystiq tradition.


This week, we're looking back at a rad 1991 TV commercial for the legendary add-on device, the Game Genie. This "pass-through" style cartridge allowed players the chance to input cheat codes for their favorite games on a number of consoles.

The ad above focused on the NES version of the Game Genie while paying homage to the comedic duo Bill and Ted. What stood out wasn't just the exploding television, but the use of "live f orever" as a selling point for the peripheral. The phrase popped up in other Game Genie commercials, and clearly referred to the common cheat code players could plug in to nearly any game, unlimited lives.

The prospect of immortality in video games was strong enough for players to buy the device, and for Sega to stamp its seal of approval on it. Apparently, the Game Genie is still immortal, as it was resurrected by Hyperkin this year for PS3.

Snapshot: Anna (PC)

There are so many games out there we couldn't possibly review them all. Welcome to Snapshot, where we highlight games that might fall outside our usual coverage but are still something we think you should know about.

Don't fool yourself about what type of game Anna is. Though screenshots may deceive you into believing the game is a realistic point-and-click set in the gorgeous Italian countryside, Anna is a horror game through and through. Even the developers at Dreampainters pitch Anna as a classic point-and-click adventure, based on the heritage of Val D'Ayas, a small village steeped in ancient folklore. The sawmill? "Oh, that, it's sort of haunted," the developers seem to say, "but don't worry your pretty little head about it."

After playing Anna, I suggest you worry about it. Worry ab out it a lot.

Anna's opening scenes are deceptive as well, placing you outside the sawmill on a beautiful, sunny day, next to a crystal clear creek with birdsong on the breeze. The cheery tune that plays in the beginning becomes a balm for later scenes, popping up just when the creaking floorboards, disembodied wailing and sporadic whispers reach a fever pitch and you're ready to rip off your headphones and put on an episode of Adventure Time to calm down. That said â€" definitely play Anna with headphones on.

That is, of course, if you enjoy being scared. If the adrenaline rush accompanying a sudden, unexplained noise shuffling across your eardrums is something you crave; if you laugh while simultaneously screaming and jumping from your chair. Anna will lull you into a false sense of security, only to shatter it in the most gruesome of ways. If you enjoy that kind of thing, really, play Anna with headphones on.


Anna tells the story of a "lost love," wrapped up in mythical rituals, religious lore and brutal murder. it's important to keep this mind while playing, since approaching it as a standard point-and-click is a tad misleading. There are no on-screen hints, no icons hovering above objects to indicate their utility, nothing to distract from the pure, blood-soaked story playing out on-screen. This makes it an intuitive, introspective point-and-click, and if lost in a puzzle, it helps to take step back from the minutiae of looking for a solution and remember the story's roots. This is a game about forest rituals and violent rites, and it carries that tone of ceremony throughout each of its riddles. Apply this knowledge to your logic and the game will flow more smoothly.

Parts of Anna, however, simply aren't smooth. It took me a few tries to realize the inventory has arrows for more items on the right side of the grid, almost faded into the background. The reticle can be finicky ab out which parts of an item are clickable. It also feels as though I can't look down as far as I'd like, as if my virtual neck was in a padded brace. These things are all easily forgotten in the midst of Anna's intense story, thankfully, along with the other subtle details it conveys extremely well.

For example, at one point, right after things started to get real, I was searching the sawmill and walked toward a wall, head-on. I paused. The wall was glowing red, when it wasn't the moment before. I backed up and the glow disappeared; I moved forward and the red spread across the wall in a hellish halo. And that's when I realized that it wasn't the wall that was glowing, it was me. In fact, it was probably emanating from my eyes, overlain in pulsating demonic hues just like the terrifying ritual paintings lining the walls. This simple revelation creeped me right out, and it's something some players may never even notice.

Other parts of Anna made me shriek and pull my hands over my eyes, pushing my chair away from the screen (and scaring the dog). It's layered with subtle, psychological horror and grotesque, obvious acts of violence and fright. The sawmill reminds me of The Shining's infamous Overlook Hotel, emanating the succinct feeling of being "off" just by existing. Objects seem to appear out of nowhere, symbols on the walls change places, making the scenery both disorienting and intriguing.

I entered Anna wanting to be scared, probably because it's been too long since I last played Amnesia, and the Slenderman games are mostly predictable by now (though still disturbing). Anna is a refreshing horror game for those looking to be frightened on the week before Halloween, or just for those who enjoy a good story. A good story about ritual infanticide and goat-faced demons, but a good story nonetheless.

Since Typing of the Dead still isn't given to every school-age child, may we suggest Travis Chen's Typing Karaoke? It provides the same tension as the former product, minus the gore. In fairness, it can be very difficult. Start with "Creep" or that Jason Mraz jam and work from there.
